Movie Review – Antichrist (2009)

Title: Antichrist (2009)
Runtime: 108 minutes
Director: Lars von Trier

There’s pre-Antichrist and post-Antichrist life, and everything I do from here on out can be considered post-Antichrist. This is – hyperbole aside – the most difficult movie I’ve ever sat through, and I’ve watched both The Life and Death of a Porno Gang and A Serbian Film in the past three months. More than simply hard to watch, though, Antichrist is beautifully shot, and seems to me like the X-rated version of the French New Wave for modern audiences.

Antichrist tells the story of two parents who suffer the loss their young boy. He sneaks out of his bed while the two are making love, and climbs out an open window, falling to his death. What follows is the story of how these two lovers will handle their lives after losing their child. Continue reading

Musings On… Criterion Sale-ing 2012

Almost one year ago, I wrote about my purchases during the July, 2011 Barnes and Noble/Criterion Collection sale. I ended up taking my collection from 12 Criterion titles, to 31 Criterion releases, and picked up some cinematic gems, to say the least. Last summer, though, I had a great job that was paying me more than I ever made in my life, and thus, had cash to spare. That couldn’t be further from the way I am this summer, a recent Masters of Fine Arts grad, searching for work, but I still had to take advantage of my favorite sale of every year. Continue reading

Blu-ray Review – A Hollis Frampton Odyssey (Criterion Collection)

(Originally written for Inside Pulse Movies)

Making my way through twenty-four of Hollis Frampton’s films, thanks to the Criterion Collection, reminded me of the time I walked through one of New York City’s contemporary art museums, the Guggenheim. Walking through the winding halls of the Guggenheim Museum, I couldn’t figure out why a completely black canvas, or completely white canvas, was considered “art”. Being only seventeen years old at the time, I figured I just didn’t “get it”, and moved on. Continue reading

Blu-ray Review – La haine (Criterion Collection)

(Originally written for Inside Pulse Movies)

La haine, which translates to “hate” in English, is a perfect title for Mathieu Kassovitz’s film, which revolves entirely around the hatred that brews between the teenagers in France’s projects, and the corrupt police officers that attempt to control them. Everything that happens in the first two acts leads to the brutal reality of the film’s final, starkly beautiful moment, and Kassovitz’s film is just as important today as it was when it released in 1995.
